In 2005, Mayor Bloomberg agreed to build 33 new acres of parks in North Brooklyn as part of a massive rezoning that is bringing tens of thousands of new residents. The deal included a 28-acre park along Bushwick Inlet, a 3-acre park at 65 Commercial Street, and two acres now occupied by a sludge tank at Barge Park.

Six years later, none of these parks have been completed, despite the thousands of new residents already brought by the rezoning to Greenpoint and Williamsburg. North Brooklyn’s total parkland is only about one-third of the citywide average. The Bloomberg Administration now says it has "no funding for" and "no schedule for" upholding its open space commitment to North Brooklyn.
